Lyle Community Action Council Agenda Set
The monthly LCAC meeting agenda is full of action packed topics starting at 6:30 P.M. on Monday, July 28th.
Lorraine Reynolds of the PUD Water and Waste Water Department has accepted Lyle Community Council’s invitation to attend their July 28th meeting. Also invited are the PUD Commissioners. This will give Lyle residents a chance to discuss and question the new water and sewer rates. Also attending this meeting will be attorney Jill Long from Portland. She has asked to come and address Lyle citizens and gather their input about the urban growth boundary issues with the Columbia Gorge Commission. Curt Dryer from the County Planning Department has agreed to attend and the County Commissioners have also been invited. This meeting is an opportunity for you to share your ideas and concerns; each subject will have the floor for a one hour presentation and questions. Then there will be 30 minutes to wrap it up and the meeting will adjourn at 9 p.m. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. instead of the regular 7:00 p.m. meeting time because of the two large issues on the agenda.

The Sundowner’s Update
Local group takes many awards at The Oregon Samboree in Madras! Russell & Clara Hunter and Jim & Eileen Brashers were honored for their 50+ wedding anniversaries. Dave Howard, Larry Sorensen, Eileen Brashers and Mary Sorensen brought home awards for participating in several different contests, such as washer toss, cow chip toss and a water jug decoration contest in the theme of “Let Freedom Ring”. The next outing is the Washington State Samboree, date to be announced later.

All School Reunion
It’s almost here! The committee is working long hours to get everything ready. George Cooper is once again searching out the door prizes, donations, and he has found a really clever surprise for the table decorations. So come with your reminiscing hats and be prepared to share some great times. Have you sent in your reservation? Have you dug out your school photos to share? There is still time to do so.

Lyle History (continued):  Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:
We have enjoyed our first brush with this amazingly, vigorous frontier before white man had hardly touched its shores on through the courage, stamina and determination of the first adventurous and hardy men to map out our region here in the Northwest. We must pay tribute to the men and women among our first settlers in their heroic efforts to hew out a spot in this vast wilderness.

Drama Students Entertain
There were many familiar faces both on stage and in the audience at The Granada Theater in The Dalles this past weekend. Students from Lyle, The Dalles, and Dufur combined their talents and gave the community a rousing good time in their presentation of George M. Cohan’s play “Give My Regards to Broadway”. The theater wasn’t as full as in past performances, but those attending made up for it with their cheers, applause and standing ovation. Once again the team of Gail Farris and Nancy Moon (along with many others) should be commended for the outstanding training and guidance given to the drama students. The costumes were creative and authentic to the era. The tribute to local military members was beautifully done.

Sundowner’s Update
June campout was held in Goldendale at the Evan’s home. There were 2 rigs leading the way on Thursday evening, and more came on Friday. The weekend was cut short for several when Delbert Brashers took ill and was life-flighted to Portland. No word at this time on his condition.  Earlier in the month there were 9 rigs attending the annual auction and bar-b-que in Ione, Oregon.

“Find the Key”
No clue this week. We had a winner, Eva France, from the Klickitat County Monitor, found it this week. Watch for the new contest starting next week.

All School Reunion
The time is getting closer for the all school reunion. Have you sent in your reservation, dug out your old annuals, and your favorite school pictures? If you have attended in the past you know what a good time is had and the friendships that have been renewed. Send in your reservation and get on the bandwagon for a fun time!

Lyle History (continued):  Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:
Mrs. West’s parents (Mr. & Mrs. Claus Staack) purchased the 600-acre estate in 1941 from the Balfours making it into a prosperous cattle ranch.  Jim West furnished the first lights in Lyle. He had a Delco plant at the Columbia Garage (where the Richfield station is today). It was only for the business district. The lights were turned on at sundown and off at 10:00 P.M.  About fifteen years later a power line was brought in from White Salmon, then everyone had lights and power permanently.

Week Ending June 13, 2003:
Red Hats seen in The Dalles
Wearing their beautiful (and what a variety) Red Hats, twenty-six Lyle ladies took over the party room of the Ixtapa restaurant last week. The occasion was to celebrate birthdays for Mary, Alice and Shannon. Those attending were heard to be planning many more “Red Hat” events in the near future.

The Event of the Summer
The 13-mile yard sale was held this past Saturday. Spanning from Lyle to Klickitat, the road was dotted with sale signs.  I’m sure that the bargain hunters were out bright and early. Were you one of them and did you find the deal of your life?

Council Meeting
Plan to attend the Community Council meeting on June 23rd at the Lyle Lions Community Center at 7 p.m. Some of the items on the agenda will be: final adoption of the updated by-laws; reports on the communities’ yard sales; the PUD workshop; and an update on the Annual Chili Cook-Off plans. We also need ideas from as many as possible for the EDA grant this year. Liz Kinne will speak about the outreach/education program that Klickitat has adopted. It is called Stream Stewards.

T
he planning for the all-school reunion is well underway and the reservations are coming in daily. Have you sent yours in?  The event is planned for the 2nd and 3rd of August. If you haven’t received the information in the mail, call 365-5374 and leave your name and address on the answering machine . . . slowly and clearly. The information will be sent right out.

Lyle History (continued):  Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:

The boat was late in departure but did get all but two of the porkers on board, the river got the other two. Bryd wrote, “You can imagine what the deck hands were saying”.

The Grange Hall up on the hill has quite a distinction in that it is the oldest that has been in continuous use in the State, in fact it was built before we even had a State. The Grange was organized in 1889, the Hall was dedicated in 1891, so must have been built before then. They had a charter when this was still the Oregon Territory. Changes have been made on the interior but the exterior is the same as when it was built, all but for adding a small section. This was one of the main meeting places for the early settlers so is very dear to many of them.

The Main Library at Indiana University sinks over an inch every year because when it was built, the engineers failed to take into account the weight of all the books that would occupy the building.

The Frogs circled the hall
Dallesport Elementary students reached their reading goal. Mr. Huffman kept his word and dyed his hair Green last Friday. He then entertained the students by proving that he also could read, and read several stories to them. Seeing their principle with green hair and being read to, the students celebrated their triumph!

Speaking of triumph
Our congratulations go out to all of the graduating seniors, for reaching one of their major goals in life. Enjoy your summer, as you get ready to face your future and the personal goals you have set. We are sure each of you will succeed in your individual endeavors.

Speaking of endeavors
This past weekend found several of us making our yearly trek to Ione, OR. This was the weekend of their 41st Annual auction for the Church of Jesus Christ.  Even though the crowd was somewhat thinner and the day was a whole lot warmer, the food was fantastic, and the sales were first-rate! Most of us didn’t have to dig too deep into the pocket books to cover the price of some great bargains.

Speaking of great bargains
The 13-mile yard sale is this Saturday, June 14th.  Spanning from Lyle to Klickitat the road will be dotted with bargains, as many will hold their personal yard sale that day. Pick up your treasure map of locations at the local businesses. Bring your bottle of water, hit the road in earnest and remember one person’s junk could be “your” treasure.

Lyle History (continued):  Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:

Fred Smith tells how he found this out one night when he tried to swim his single footer across from an island near The Dalles . . . before he landed on this side he had drifted clear down in the current to Lyle, soaking wet and mighty cold. Byrd Clark wrote that a big, fat hog can’t swim very far either. When as a young man living on the ranch, he brought a wagonload of fat hog down to the boat for shipment to market. They ran the gangplank from the boat to the back end of the wagon with gates up on the sides so they could run the hogs up onto the boat. Gentle persuasion caused them to knock down the sides of the ramp and into the river they went. The captain ordered the deck hands to round up the hogs in the lifeboats. They herded them back to the landing. A fat hog can’t swim very long until they give out and drown.
