February 2003

Week Ending February 28, 2003:

Members of the Lyle Middle School’s “100 Club” enjoyed banana splits as a reward for their hard work. Forty-four students were recognized for earning their first or second thirty-three 100’s since the beginning of the school year. The following four students earned one hundred or more 100’s:  Marya  Poff, Shelly Stanovich, Joey Nelson, and Reashel Schultz.

What are the odds? Two siblings, who grew up in Lyle, each had twin girls. Now one of each of those twins is having identical twin girls. Clauda Thomas, their proud Aunt and soon to be Great Aunt, gave us this news. Her brother Lee and her deceased sister Julie were the parents of the first two sets of twins.

Clauda has returned to live in the area, as have so many, who grew up here with happy childhood memories. Speaking of which, this is the year of the “All School” reunion. We need to get a group together and get the ball rolling guys! Are you ready? We need a take-charge sort of person, are you out there???

Find the Key and earn the prize.

Clue # 1 for March

Natives to the North
Numbers East and West
President to the South
Find me and beat the rest

Pioneer Days are Back this Year~
Memorial Day Weekend

The event is still in need of Princesses!  As an incentive, the Queen will win $300, the runner up will win $200, Miss Congeniality will win $100, and all the other Princesses will win $50.00 each.  Gals, that money will help out when you plan your summer fun or wardrobe. The deadline for signup is March 14th. A volunteer is also needed to run the bumper sticker program.  The music for the Saturday night dance, at the Grange Hall, will be none other than our well-loved Mr. Pete Graves. Those of us over 50 will remember dancing to his music years ago. What a memory he provided by  “Bumming Around”!

Two churches in Lyle welcome visitors:
Lyle United Methodist Church -- Worship Sundays at 9:30 a.m. and Bible Study on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m.
Lyle Full Gospel Church -- Sunday School at 9:30 a.m., followed by Worship service on Sundays at 10:30 a.m.

Lyle History (continued): Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:
Because this means of travel was slow, there was a big need of several hotels, a livery stable, blacksmith shop and of course two or more saloons; a bank and several stores; so it can be seen that this was quite a little shopping center before the railroads and highways came though.  The Clarks, Sorensens, Daffrons, Kures, Hewitts, Olsons, Chamberlains, and Korthase, all figured very prominently in the early growth of the community.

What a difference 100 years makes. Here are some US statistics for 1902. Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound.

Week Ending February 21, 2003:
A work in progress - Klickitat has invited our community to join them in a (two) community-wide yard sale. Watch this column for the dates to plan your personal yard sale. Maps and advertisements will be generated once the event is scheduled and we have names and address of participants. Start collecting your valuables (or junk) and let's have a fun time making money. This could possibly draw large crowds from as far away as Portland.

Once again the community is saddened by the death of a local resident. William (Bill) Pfaff passed away this past Tuesday. Alice, our prayers are with you.

You are invited to come to a meeting in Klickitat on Monday, March 3rd, at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Brick Building.   Commemorating the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial will be the main topic. The communities of Lyle and Klickitat are preparing plans to join forces. Volunteers are needed. If the history of Lewis and Clark is an interest of yours, you would be welcome to attend and get involved. Your input is greatly welcomed and urgently needed.

Find the Key and earn the prize.

Clue # 4

Once standing tall and plain
Now greets in prone
I can feel the train
In # Three zone

This is the last clue of February’s contest. If the key hasn’t been found, it will be hidden (in plain site), somewhere else, and there will be new weekly clues and a new prize. At the end of February, if the key hasn’t been found, you can stop at the Monitor’s office and see a photo showing where it was hidden.

COME ON YOU SUPER SLEUTHS, LET'S FIND THAT KEY!

Lyle History (continued): Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:
The rolling rock has all but filled it in the rest of the way, though glimpses may still be had for more than a mile farther up the river. The road was never completed. About twenty-five years later the State had a long look at their map and found out that the Lewis and Clark Highway hadn’t been finished so by golly we got us one though here.

It wasn’t uncommon to see a wagon with four to six horses pulling a load of wheat into town from the prairie, unload for shipment to market, go to the hotel, stay overnight and go back home the next day.

What a difference 100 years makes. Here are some US statistics for 1902. The average wage in the US was 22 cents an hour.

Week Ending February 14, 2003:
Twenty-two Lyle ladies enjoyed their birthday luncheon this past week at the Ixtapa restaurant in The Dalles. The Seven gals celebrating January and February birthdays included Peggy, Betty, Marg, Marilyn, Martha, Ida, and Barbara with one March birthday, Joan who is wintering in Arizona. The gals talked about becoming members of the “Red Hat Society”. Darla is looking into what is required to join this fun Society.

Dallesport Elementary students are hard at work on their play. So mark your calendar and plan to attend one of the two March performances. These students and their teachers do a wonderful job each year with their productions. This is a great opportunity for the students to learn the ins and outs of taking part in a public performance. More information regarding the dates, and title of the play, etc. will be in later news articles.

Clue # 3
I’m hanging lower than five
But higher than knee
Two junctions are near
Come and find me!

Each week a new clue will be presented. Add that new clue to last week’s clue and you will be that much closer to the hiding place. One clue each month will list the zone in which you will find the key. Stop in at the Monitor’s office and pick up your Disaster Plan Zone Map  which will aid you in your quest. Each month we will give the key a new hiding place, have a new prize, and all new riddles. The key will not be hidden in a place that would cause harm or endangerment to the participants!  If you have any questions about this contest, call MILDRED @ 365-0060.

Don’t miss this month’s Lyle Community Action Council meeting. On the agenda are two guest speakers: one from Sprint; and the other from the County Weed Control Department. Peyt Turner will deliver the final presentation of Lyle’s Community Disaster Plan.  Klickitat County Sheriff Chris Mace will be available to respond to your concerns and/or questions.  February 24th at 7 p.m. at the Lyle Lions Community Center.

Lyle History (continued): Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:
“One of the cheapest ways to build was to use the existing convict labor already here. You can still see some of the results of their labor as you are leaving town by looking up above the highway, as you are, the tunnel clearance sign is just below quite an extensive bit of cement work. Rex Bullis has unearthed a culvert dated 1915. The roadbed is plainly visible from the roadside park just beyond.”

Week Ending February 7, 2003:
The community extends its sympathy to the families of Joseph Pinell. He was laid to rest on Saturday at Balch Cemetery. The community also lost one of its “Centurions” this week. Karmen Kingery passed away on Friday the 7th, at the Foster Home where she had resided for the past four years. Karmen was 102 on her last birthday in January.

Stop in the Monitor office and pick up your Disaster Plan Zone Map, which will also aid you in your quest for the key.

The LCAC urges your attendance at the next meeting on February 24th. At this meeting the council will be presenting the final Disaster Plan and distributing Emergency Plan Information. Chris Mace, our County Sheriff, will be in attendance to answer any questions about this plan. Mary Gumm from Sprint will update the community on the fiber optic cable that has been installed, and what benefits it will bring to the citizens of Lyle. Also on the agenda will be Marty Hudson, Klickitat County Noxious Weed Control Department to update us on how to control the Noxious Weeds on private property and in the community. This will be a very informative evening. Questions??? This is your opportunity to ask them. Plan to attend and let your voice be heard!

Lyle History (continued): Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:
About 1900, a convict camp was established up near where the Thunderbird is now, over and back of the tunnels east of town. That was before there was any road up the river toward Dallesport. The renowned and respected builder of the Northwest that build railroads, is supposed to have fostered the idea of building a road up the river. (Samuel Hill wanted very much to have a road to Maryhill from Lyle because his castle and Stone Henge, which is a replica of a ruined structure of giant stones on Salisbury Plain in S. W. England; of great antiquity: perhaps once a temple of the sun. The castle has now been turned into a museum).

Old age is when former classmates are so gray and wrinkled, and bald they don’t recognize you.
