COMMUNITY NEWS

June 2002

Week of June 14, 2002
A big Community Thank You! to the person or persons who weed-eated and cleaned around our new playground.  This is such a nice place for the kids to play and we really appreciate your taking pride in keeping it attractive and safe for them to play.

Twenty-six ladies enjoyed the Birthday Lunch this week at the Hong Kong Buffet.  Those celebrating June birthdays were:  Lillian Hamm, Mary Migaki, Alice Mattox, Francis Ewing, Margo Patrick, Sarah Kalil, and Vi Bellete.

Once again the flower thieves hit the cemetery after Memorial Day.  How sad families cannot pay tribute to their loved ones without having someone who has no respect for others stealing that tribute.  How do you reach this place in life that you feel you have to go to a cemetery and steal?  How would you react if this were done to your loved ones' grave?  I’m sure that you are the kind of person who can’t keep your mouth shut about doing such a stupid deed and I hope that when you brag to others about what you did, they will, in turn report you to the authorities.

Eight rigs of local Sundowners attended the Ione Auction.  This is always a really good auction plus a great barbecued meal and an outing that we all look forward to.

Just a reminder:  The Chip Site is open for Spring.  Dispose of your brush and limbs at this site, recycle all that you can and let's see if we can do away with burn barrels.

Lyle's Burn Ban goes into effect the 10th of June.

The June meeting of the Lyle Community Action Council is scheduled for Monday, June 24th, at 7:00 p.m., Lions Club.  "Town Slogan" Contest for Lyle entries deadline is September 2nd [this is a correction from last week's news].

Lyle History: As published in the Ruralite September 1985:

Two-year old Pepper Tu is the guardian, the conversation piece, and the pampered mascot for Crosby Stables near Lyle.

He is also a recent example of Jim Crosby’s capacity to be flexible enough to change his mind to meet new opportunities.

Pepper Tu is a small, strange looking black dog of the rare Belgian breed called Schipperke, which means “little captain.”  Jim and Eunice Crosby laughingly admit that though they have never wanted to have a dog around- “too messy and too smelly!”- they are now 100 percent boosters for Pepper Tu.  “Feel his hair,” they urge.  Surprisingly, it is rough and stiff on top but fine and silky below.”  So there’s no shedding hair and never any odor!”

Happiness is like a cat.  It eludes those who seek it and jumps into your lap when you least expect it.

Boy, how the wind must have howled or the cows must have roamed!  Instead of Lyle on the hill, we have Pyle on the hill.  We hope there are enough energetic students around the next few weeks to hike up to the sign and put Lyle back on the hill.  Thank you in advance.  We appreciate your help.

The May stats for Lyle are as follows: Disorderly conduct 4, Theft 2, Suspicious circumstances 5, Malicious mischief 4, Civil complaints 2, Citizens assist 2, Driving while intoxicated 1, Animal complaints 2, Trespassing complaints 2, Motor vehicle accident/injury 1, and Forgery/fraud complaint 1.  Well, let’s see, May had 31 days and there were 26 calls from Lyle.  Now that is something to be really proud of!!  NOT!!  And you can’t even lay any of these calls on 911 hang-ups.  These are all legitimate calls.

Congratulations, John and Shin for the fun day of Music at the Merc.  We both were out of town but the rumors are that it was a huge success.  Let us know in advance next year so that we can help get the word out.

Lots of construction is going on in Lyle.  It’s wonderful to see the homeowners and businesses putting their faith in the community.

The usual large contingency from Lyle were seen at the Ione Auction last weekend.  There were even several new Lylites there.  If you haven’t made this auction before, you are missing a fun day and a wonderful meal.  Put it on your calendar for next year.  It is always on the first Saturday in June.  You might also make note that Pine Grove Fire Department has their auction on the first Saturday in March.

Just a reminder:  The Chip Site is open for Spring.  Dispose of your brush and limbs at this site, recycle all that you can and let's see if we can do away with burn barrels.

Lyle History: As published in the Ruralite September 1974:

Soon he’ll be transplanting the tomato plants he raised from a very special seed which the catalog promises will produce “big, juicy slicers”.

Tim has planted watermelons, too, and gives fair warning that if anyone tries to make off with those prizes the long – deserted town-site of “old Lyle” could once again ring out with a shotgun blast!

A man to reckon with – Tim Wall.

Standing in the middle of the road is dangerous.  You will get knocked down by the traffic from both ways.
