April 2003

Week Ending April 25, 2003:
The local theatrical group, “The Pretenders,” are at it again!  Rehearsals have started for a May performance. The program format will be a little different this time with three separate one-act plays, and perhaps desserts in place of dinners. The final decisions are forthcoming. So be prepared to enjoy another evening of homegrown quality entertainment soon!

Lyle Balch Cemetery Clean-Up will be held Saturday, May 17, starting at 8:30 a.m.  A potluck lunch and annual business meeting will follow at the Columbia Grange Hall. Speaking of the Cemetery, it would be very much appreciated, that when birdwatching or flower photographing, that the gates to the Cemetery be closed upon leaving. Volunteers manage this cemetery. They won’t always know that the gates are left wide open, allowing cows and wildlife to pass through. Out of respect for the residents buried therein, PLEASE REMEMBER TO CLOSE THE GATES!

Registration forms are in the mail for the All Lyle School Reunion that will take place the first weekend of August 2003. If you haven’t received yours, or know of someone else who hasn’t, please contact PO Box 191 with a current address.

Graduation Plus One:
Saturday, May 3rd, at the Dallesport Community Center from 9 a. m. to 3 p.m. will be the class’s yard sale. Clean out your closets and garages and give these kids a helping hand.  If you have items to donate, please call Cathy Single at 767-1426 or Susan Billette at 365-2444. There will also be a bottle and can drive at the Gazebo by the Ted Walker Memorial Swimming Pool in The Dalles. There are bins for these items in the schoolbus yard in Lyle.  The date and hours coincide with the yard sale. If you need someone to pick up your bottles or cans, call Margie Bodolay at 365-3505 or Colleen Webster at 365-3566.

Lyle History (continued):  Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:
Something similar went on when they built the railroad up through Klickitat to Goldendale. When they got as far old Chief Skukum Wallehe’s place just beyond Pitt. He wanted a contract. They dickered, and the more they dickered the more rocks he rolled, and he continued to roll rocks down on the workmen until they signed an agreement allowing him to ride to Goldendale whenever he took a good notion to. Every day for a long time he would go out, flag the train down, and take himself a ride to Goldendale and back. They tried to discourage him at times but he didn’t discourage easy.  This was the first railroad in Klickitat County built in 1902 . . . the mainline wasn’t built until 1908.

If you must choose between two evils, pick the one you’ve never tried before.

Week Ending April 18, 2003:
First meeting of 2003 found the Local Sundowners RV Club at the Grange Hall. Many of the members were still on their Arizona Safari, so it was a small gathering.   Their first outing was at the Tygh Valley fairgrounds in April.  There were nine member rigs with two guest rigs driven by Jim and Nancy McCall from The Dalles and Leland and Arlene Brasuell of White Salmon.  Shirley Tanner provided a cake in celebration of the Sundowners “30th” year. Charter members still belonging are Frank and Shirley Tanner, Evie Trenchman, Alta Shields Russell and Clara Hunter, Larry and Mary Sorensen, and Jim and Eileen Brashers.  The Tanners were honored for their 64th   wedding anniversary. The next outing will be at Beacon Rock in May.

Ice cream time again for 30 students at Lyle Middle School, for a job well done, in the Accelerated Reader (AR) Program.  Carrie Nickols, an eighth grader, held high score with 37.2 points.

Three middle school students earned the prestigious “Student of the Month” for March. They were Stanton Hyrniak, Jessica Cochenour, and Stephen Hyrniak. Congratulations to all of you.

Lyle History (continued):  Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:
An old treaty had reserved the rights of this property for the Indians only. They got spooked about the whole deal, gave it up and finally moved the whole thing down to what is the Northwestern Dam on the White Salmon River . . . right below Husum. White Salmon and Bingen got lights but Lyle, got nary a glimmer.

“Go” is the shortest complete sentence in the English language.

Week Ending April 11, 2003:
Thank you, Thank you, who ever you are that mowed the areas around the “Welcome to Lyle” signs. They look so inviting now!

VOLUNTEERISM IS ALIVE AND WELL IN OUR COMMUNITY!
Community residents were out in force this weekend.  Lyle Community Council members manned the Annual Clean-Up. The Lions Club and some Council members made up a litter patrol that combed SR-14 from the center of town to Chamberlain Rest Area. Employees from The Merc and the Country Café gathered debris East of Lyle.  Two neighbors walked 5 miles along Centerville Hwy and Keasy Street in town filling 15 bags with litter.  Jim Rutledge continued the work started by Dean Oldenburg of weed eating around the Welcome signs.  High School Students delivered trash bags door to door on Friday and several helped with the litter patrol. Lions Club members could be seen atop the Club House repairing a leak, while Darla Brashers was inside making Cinnamon Rolls and Coffee for the crews.   This community should take a bow for jobs well done!  Think before you litter” and the job will be easier next year.

BIG THANKS go to the PUD for hanging the Council’s new banner for the Clean-Up.  This banner will be utilized each year with only the dates needing changed.

LCAC News
Jack Bryan reported to the Council that the Fire Department is to take delivery of their “Brand New Fire Truck.” This vehicle was purchased with a FEMA Grant, department funds and a small loan.  The new Fire Hall is nearing completion. Hope the community will be invited to a grand opening celebration.

At the meeting on April 28, the Lyle Community Action Council will host Kim Titus from the Forest Service. She will update us on the “Star Property Park” and Lyle-Klickitat “Rails to Trails Project”.

The Council will review the proposed changes and updates of the Council’s By-Laws.

Graduation Plus One:
They will hold a can & bottle drive on May 3rd and a spring yard sale is planned soon in Dallesport. More information will follow.

The students wish to thank the Lyle Hotel for donating the grand prize for their “Spaghetti Feed” fundraiser. LeRoy Sorensen was the lucky winner.

Lyle History (continued):  Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:

Many thought an electric plant in the Gorge of the Klickitat River was a feasible idea, down below the Fisher Hill Bridge; trouble dogged their steps from the very start.  To begin with one old squaw sold them the rights three different times….three individuals, each paid a $1,000 apiece only to find out too late that she didn’t have the right to sell any of it.

The pursuit of happiness is the chase of a lifetime.

Marian (Maria) Reeves passed away early Saturday morning. She has resided at A & G Adult Foster Home in Lyle for the past several years. The staff knew her as the “Lady in Red” because she chose to always wear shades of red including her many hats. Maria was 101 years old and had received a Centurion birthday card from President Bush. She kept the other residents and staff entertained with her yodeling and songs in German. Maria will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

The Lyle Lion’s Community Center was filled to capacity on Saturday the 5th. The Republican Party hosted their “Lincoln Day” dinner. Those in attendance included Senator Jim Honeyford, Representative Bruce Chandler, and Congressman Doc Hastings, as well as many of our local elected officials. A White Salmon Boy Scout Color Guard presented the flag and lead the pledge of allegiance. There were several tributes honoring armed forces fighting for our freedoms. Speeches, silent auctions, wonderful food, and fund raising helped fill the evening with enjoyment for all who attended.

The annual Lyle Spring Clean Up is set for April 11 and 12. If in need of assistance in hauling your debris, please call Peyt Turner @ 365-2333.
Some tips on re-cycling could help with plans on what to discard at the clean up.  Most all paper and cardboard products, plastic, and tin cans (that are clean and have both ends cut off) can be re-cycled in the same bag. Re-cycle bags can be picked up at the transfer station in Dallesport. Glass must be taken there and sorted by color. Tri-County Disposal will pick up those bags twice a month for free.  Questions?? Call 773-5825 for further information. Remember, to the benefit of all, what is recycled does not end up in the landfill.

Lyle Cemetery Clean-Up is scheduled for May 17th. Clean up starts at 8:30 am, followed with a Potluck at the Grange Hall, concluding with the annual business meeting.

June 14th, 2003 is the date set for the new “13 Mile Yard sale”. This will be a joint community yard sale shared with the community of Klickitat, with each participant in charge of their own sale. Call Joy Collins @ 365-5102 to get your address on the map, or for more information.

Lyle History (continued):  Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:

His father was a college graduate, which was in itself quite noteworthy on the west coast in the 1800’s particularly here in the Northwest. It isn’t at all surprising that Fred was able to write fluently at an early age with that background.

Having a sharp tongue can cut your own throat.
