Lyle Citizens Action Community Council Meeting
Main Meeting Topic: Disaster Preparedness

There were over 65 people in attendance at the Disaster Preparedness meeting held at the Lyle Lions Community Center. The key note speaker, Cheri Lovre, spoke about her experiences as a crisis interventionist at Thurston High School, Columbine, and New York City. Her presentation set the stage for other speakers to discuss their roles in disaster and emergencies at local levels. Jeff Parsons, Washington State Emergency Management Division Supervisor spoke and shared a video on how to form a community disaster plan. Representatives from thirteen Oregon and Washington agencies including law enforcement, emergency management, hospitals, fire departments, Red Cross, schools, Department of Health, and Sprint addressed their disaster plans and how they would relate to our community in the event of a disaster. A sincere Thank You to all who participated and made this first meeting a success.

A committee has been formed that will work with state and local agencies to continue to plan, develop procedures, exercise our county emergency plan and supporting documents. Volunteers are needed for this committee. Contact Peyt Turner at 509-365-2333 if you can help.

The Lyle Community Action Council has postponed the 1st Annual Chili Cook-off till the fall. We’ll let you know the date at a later time.

The Lyle Fire Department is receiving a $30,000 grant towards a new building from the Economic Development Association. Congratulations!!

Just a reminder: The Chip Site is open for Spring .

February 22, 2002

Thanks to the persistence of the Lyle Community Action Council and interested citizens, we now have a 30 mph speed limit through the corridor of our community.  The state installed the new signs, which also moved the 60 mph speed limit farther to the east and west of the city limits.  Have you noticed that drivers are already slowing down? Hurrah!!!

Twenty-three ladies enjoyed a birthday luncheon at the Lone Pine Restaurant in The Dalles, Wednesday the 20th of February.  This was the first luncheon of this year and eight birthdays were honored.  Those celebrating were Betty, Martha, Joan, Marg, Ida, Marilyn, Marcia, and Barbara.  Once again, thanks Marcella.

Correction:
You cannot put glass in recycle bags that are picked up at curbside.  Dumpsters are provided for different colors of glass and also containers for disposal of hazardous materials (batteries, oil, paint) are at the Transfer Station in Dallesport.

Lyle Fire Stats for January were three (3) Medical calls and no fire calls.

Just a reminder:  The Chip Site is now open for Spring.

Dates for the Dallesport Elementary Student Play, “Kilroy was Here” are March 22nd and 23rd.

Van Sorensen and his wife Edith, enjoyed most of all to visit with their many friends and neighbors.  They took an active part in Columbia Grange at Lyle and the Methodist Church.  Death came to this kindly man April 1, 1951 and he was buried in the Balch Cemetery on the hill near Lyle.  His good and faithful wife, Edith, passed away December 19, 1965. – Walter and Eunice Omeg

KILROY WAS HERE!   COMING IN MARCH.

On March 22nd and 23rd, Dallesport Elementary Drama students will present a two hour musical salute to the armed forces for their spring drama production.  Plan to attend one of their three performances.  The ending will move you as the students salute the various branches of the Armed Forces of yesterday and today.  Watch for the time of the performances next week.

This is an excellent time of the year to begin a recycle program in your household.  When you are thinking about what to throw away, use the free pickup to recycle paper, glass, tin cans, plastic and cardboard.  The easiest way to do this is to use the clear plastic bags available to you at the Transfer Station in Dallesport. Ask for the literature that explains what you can and cannot dispose of in this manner. They will pick up your bags the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month from in front of your house.  There is no charge.  Use the Chip Site for limbs, the Spring Clean Up for un-recyclable items, clean yard debris and grass clippings and other household disposables.  Let’s see if we can eventually eliminate all burning of debris in Lyle.

Just a reminder:  The Chip Site is open for Spring.

The Lyle Community Action Council will devote the entire February 25th meeting to speakers from Washington and Oregon who will advise local communities on procedures now in place in the event of a disaster.

Lyle History: From a book titled “History of Klickitat County” 1982, published by Klickitat Historical Society.  Van Corfix Sorensen

In 1931, Van and Edith rented their farm to Harold and moved to Odell, Oregon where they operated a small dairy.
Two years later they moved to Lyle to operate a small dairy there and Van again took the job of carrying the U.S. Mail, this time by auto on rural routes to Appleton and High Prairie.  During the winter months the roads, at times were almost impassable with snow or mud holes blocking the way.

Politics never played a big part in Van Sorensen’s life.  He voted for the person he thought was best qualified to handle the job for the best interest of the community, state or nation.  He supported wholeheartedly the passage of the Public Utility District legislation which later brought electricity to the farm people in Klickitat County and across the state of Washington.

The Lyle Community Action Council will devote the entire February 25th meeting to speakers from Washington and Oregon who will advise local communities on procedures now in place in the event of a disaster.  They will give us information on how to handle emergency situations.  We urge you, the public, to mark your calendars and attend this very important and informative meeting.  This concerns all of you and we need your cooperation in putting an emergency action plan together for Lyle.  Speakers from Olympia, Klickitat County, both Washington and Oregon State Patrols, Sprint, hospitals, schools, fire districts, and others who are responders to emergency situations will be here. TIME CHANGE FOR THIS MEETING -- because of the amount of information to be presented, this meeting will begin at 6:30 pm.  Please attend.

Good News!!!!!   The Chip Site is open again for business just in time for spring.  This has proven to be a good addition to the Lyle community, giving you a place to dispose of limbs and brush 6” or smaller.  Please dispose of this debris at the site instead of burning it.   No yard debris or grass clippings is allowed.  We urge you to respect the fact that this is a chip site and not a garbage dump.  The spring clean-up is coming soon for other disposables and the transfer station in Dallesport is perfect for household garbage.  Adherence to the rules posted at the chip site will assure the community the continued use of the site.

KILROY WAS HERE!   COMING IN MARCH.

On March 22nd and 23rd Dallesport Elementary Drama Students will present a two-hour musical. A special thank you to Diane Solomon for choreographing this year, and to Dee Williams who is once again the Musical Director and assisting Gail Farris in directing the play.  The grade school is needing military uniforms for six boys, any rank or branch of the service.  We are also looking for 1940’s style dresses or shoes.  Please call the school if you can assist us.  The setting is a USO Club in New York during the war.  We have spies, soldiers, USO gals, CIA, Military Police and government agents-an eerie mirror of our present situation.

None of the farms on the prairie had electricity until the Public Utility District provided the power many years later.  Horses supplied the power for farm cultivation and harvesting of the crops.  Household duties such as putting out the family washing was done by hand until the gasoline powered washers became available.

The Lyle Community Council is a-buzz with plans for the coming months.  The entire February meeting will be devoted to speakers from Washington and Oregon to advise local communities on procedures now in place in the event of a disaster.  They will give us information on how to handle emergency situations.  We urge you, the public, to mark your calendars and attend this very important and informative meeting.  This concerns all of you and we need your cooperation in putting an emergency action plan together for Lyle.

In March, we look forward to the First Annual Chili Cookoff, a competition among the county Volunteer Fire Departments.  This will be a public fund raiser for the fire departments and the Lyle Community Council.  HOT STUFF!!!!!!  Please help us make this a success.

Lyles’ Annual Spring Clean-Up Days will be held the weekend of April 12th and 13th.  Since the beginning of this event, we have filled 17 large dumpsters with Lyles’ disposables.  How many will we fill this year?  Let’s see if we can set a record.  We will continue to remind you of these dates.

The Lyle Community Council has made the decision that they will not be a policing organization.  If concerned citizens have complaints about any health or nuisance problems, they need to be reported directly to the proper county department.  A complaint can be made anonymously, one complaint is sufficient for a health concern to be investigated and two for a nuisance complaint. With Lyle now included in the Dog Ordinance the county can act upon those complaints also. This means that you need to keep your dogs confined as people are tired of having their garbage drug and scattered all over by dogs.

Kilroy was here! Coming in March.  On March 22nd and 23rd Dallesport Elementary Drama Students will present a two-hour musical.  The stars include: Harlin Wood, Beau Kitchens, Jessica Cochenour, Michelle Stanovich, Kate Roden, Delsie Herschbach, McKayla Perez, Valerie James, Karissa Collins, Sierra Armour, Mercedes Morrow, Kristen Stanovich, Cassie Mirless, Victoria Osborne, Kobie Moreland, Alex Herschbach, Jim Price, Austin Howard, Dallas Mattox, Brady Huffman, Ty Mileham, Justin Gonzales, Carisa Coe, Doug Thiel, Michael Eiesland, Dillon Huffman, Bianca Meza, Kevin Poff, Austin Inscore-Highley, Michelle Solomon, Lisa Denny, Nichole Loring, Jessica Gutierrez, Jessica White, Krystal Perez, Katrina Nagy, Jenelle Roden, Tiffany Jones, and Sativa Wilsey.

Van and Edith were among the first on High Prairie to buy a family car, a Maxwell, which they enjoyed.  They were short of water for the home and live stock.  Van solved that problem by having a deep well drilled (nearly 800 ft) which supplied all the water needed with help of a gasoline engine and deep well pump.

Hang out with cheerful friends……the grouches pull you down.
