July 2003

Week Ending July 26, 2003:
We are happy to report that Coy Sauls is home. He is recovering from back surgery last week in Portland. It’s wonderful that there is help for most of those suffering bad backs.

Several Community Council members attended the EDA meeting in Goldendale last week. KPUD was one of the groups on the agenda. They presented their case for the rate increases to the EDA board. No solutions were offered, but the door was opened for discussion.

Jim and Eileen Brashers celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends at their home Saturday the 26th. We will give a more indepth report next week.

Sylvia Gould’s family gathered for a family reunion over the weekend. Son Tim and family from Texas were here as well as lots of family from Oregon and locally. Time was spent visiting, catching up and lots of good food.

The all-school reunion is being held this weekend. Many of us are looking forward to greeting old school chums and reviving many a school memory. Over 100 have registered for the dinner on Saturday and about 150 for the picnic at the Lyle Lions Community Center on Sunday. Think we could still squeeze a few more in if you would like to come. Call 365-5375.

Lyle History: Takes from the Ruralite January 1980
Still Having fun! Story by M.V. Frank Morgan.
Blair has worked hard at clearing the land of stumps since the age of 14. Even when he and Dorothy were married in 1937, they worked together to clear 100 mores acres; the ranch includes 500 cleared acres now. The Shippeys are proud of the fact that their Durham-Shorthorn herd - which began in 1918 with one registered cow, an old red Durham named Cherry, and the loan of a bull from Ernie Struck - grew without any more purchasing to approximately 250 cows and a total of 500 yearlings and calves. The Grand Marshall’s trophy for the Lyle Pioneer Days parade in 1978 is recognition of the Shippeys’ long years of hard work since pioneer days.

Week Ending July 11,  2003:
Lyle Community Council July 28th meeting begins at 6:30 P.M.
Mark your calendar, invite your neighbors and bring your questions to the July 28th Council meeting. Klickitat PUD will be attending as will Jill Long an attorney from Portland. Water and Sewer rates and Lyle Urban Boundaries will be the topics on the agenda. Residents and Lyle property owners will be given the opportunity to ask questions and present their thoughts on the two subjects. Each subject will have the floor for a one-hour presentation including questions from the audience. There will be a 30-minute wrap-up and adjournment at 9 P.M.

Sundowners update
Washington State Samboree in Moses Lake saw 3 rigs of the local group attending. They helped with parking, greeting and registration. They had a fun time even though it was extremely hot for June. In July, 7 rigs spent a relaxing no host weekend at Elk’s Meadow in Trout Lake. The Howards, Larry Sorensens, and J. Brashers have volunteered to take over the maintenance of the triangle near the Klickitat County Monitor. Thank you guys -- it looks great! The next event for the Sundowners will be in August at Lewis and Clark Campgrounds in North Bonneville.

Watch for new contest next month.

Memorials
Peggy Pinell’s memorial service was held at the Lyle Lions Community Center July 12th . Friends of the family preformed a live western duet. Her daughter read a poem that she had written, and other family and friends shared in the tribute to Peggy.

Frank Tanner’s memorial service was held Friday July 18th at the Columbia Grange Hall. Pete Grave played and sang several of the songs that Frank and Shirley liked to dance to. Relatives and friends attended from as far away as San Jose, California. Pastor Les Haarstad led the service and several friends and relatives shared some of their memories of Frank. He was an early settler, coming here as a young man.

All School Reunion
It’s almost here! Have you sent in your reservation? There is still ample time to send in your reservations. George Cooper has once again out done himself finding donations and purchasing door prizes and raffle items. Approximately one hundred and twenty reservations have been made to date . . . is your name on the list?

“Would you believe that my father brought in 150 Angora goats to help clear those first acres?” Blair asks. “They kept nibbling off all the new growth around the stumps and finally killed off the pines and scrub oaks after three years or so. And shearing that long angora wool helped him make a living, along with the sawmill he set up.”

Week Ending July 4,  2003:
Volunteers to the Rescue
Thanks to the Lyle and High Prairie Volunteer Fire Departments, the Community of Lyle still has its high school and the residents near and around Spokane Street are safe and sound. Late evening on July Fourth a grass fire was ignited (most likely careless fireworks) and spread rapidly. Due to the windy conditions it worked its way up the hill from Spokane St. towards the high school. Thanks to the fast response and teamwork from both departments, the potential disaster was quickly under control. That was the second fire call of the day for Lyle. Earlier in the afternoon a flame was doused on the corner of Highway 14 and 4th St. near Lyle Park Place. Should we go for a controlled riverside launching site for fireworks next year?

Lyle History (continued):  Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:
We shared the thrills, joys heartaches and excitement in the taming of the West, just like taking a wild Mustang from the open range and making him a working part of progress. This is mans endeavor to take whatever he has and continually try to improve that to his and his neighbors gain.

We look back on this exciting episode in our history with pride and a since of gratitude, for making this a glorious example for us to follow in our efforts on our new horizons, which will be history in some future age. So ends this chapter on our pioneers.

“He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else.” --Benjamin Franklin
