March 2003

Week Ending March 28, 2003:
Belated birthday wishes go out to Frank Tanner, who celebrated the big ”90” on March 25th.

The “Birthday Luncheon Gals” turned out en masse on March 25th at Big River Diner. They proclaimed their membership in the nationally acclaimed “Red Hat Society”.  Twenty-eight ladies attended, sporting their individual crimson millinery, to celebrate birthdays for Pam Essley, Gertrude McCoy and Louise Hills. The finery ranged from an embellished baseball cap, a construction hardhat, to a furry cowboy hat. The girls outdid themselves with their creations and fashioned the niftiest styles you’ve ever seen!

The annual Lyle Spring Clean Up is set for April 11 and 12. Those needing assistance in hauling their debris call Peyt Turner @ 365-2333.

Lyle Cemetery Clean-Up is scheduled for May 17th. Clean up starts at 8:30 am, followed with a Potluck at the Grange Hall, concluding with the annual business meeting.

June 14th, 2003 is the date set for the new “13 Mile Yard sale”. This will be a joint community yard sale shared with the community of Klickitat, with each participant in charge of their own sale. Call Joy Collins @ 365-5102 to get your address on the map, or for more information.

“Graduation Plus One” wishes to thank the community and everyone who helped with the fundraiser Spaghetti feed last week. Thanks to Big River Diner, Country Café, Heidi’s Gas & Deli, Holstein’s and Griffin Motors.  Special thanks to Betty Tuthill and all the others who helped make this night such a success and helped raise funds towards our alcohol and drug-free graduation celebrations.

Lyle History (continued):  Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:
Frederic Homer Balch is buried in our Lyle Cemetery. He wrote the much publicized book, “The Bridge of the Gods”. It was published in 1890 after he had made an extensive study of the Indians habits and their beliefs. It is considered good reading particularly, because if there is no written language, the history is carried on through their legends, generation after generation.

Week Ending March 21, 2003:
 “All School Reunion” of 2003.
Dates of August 2nd and 3rd were chosen at the Lyle High Alumni Association workshop last week. The next meeting will be at Mary Sorensen’s at 151 Old Hwy, Lyle on April 5th at 12:00. Those interested in lending a hand, and lightening the load of the small handful of volunteers, are encouraged to attend. Here is your chance to get involved!

Did you attend a performance of   “King Arty and the Knights of the Rad Table” ?  This clean wholesome entertainment performed by Dallesport Elementary students was a colossal success, lots of laughs, and WOW what talent.

“Graduation Plus One”
These two reporters give the night two thumbs up! Their “Spaghetti Feed” was lip smacking good! The homemade desserts auction was the highlight of the evening with fierce competition in the bidding. Both helped raise much needed funds towards their drug and alcohol free graduation party. The community is proud of the teamwork of seniors and their parents in their mutual effort to achieve this goal! A bottle and can drive is planned for May 3rd.

Lyle History (continued):  Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:

Lord Balfour purchased the property from James O. Lyle and planted quite a bit of the lowland in grapes. The Balfours were English capitalists with Japanese houseboys, here in America to seek their fortune. While the Bafours were still here it seems the river came up so high some of the grapes were in the river water. A man wanted to land his boat in a spot where he was accustomed to landing, but this time he had to go much farther up the bank where he found himself surrounded by grapes. Sir Balfour saw him boating on his property and yelled for him to get his blasted old scow out of his vineyard! To which the man replied with considerable spirit: “Oh is that so, well, your lordship get your such and so of a grape vineyard out of my river.”

One thing you can’t recycle is wasted time.

Week Ending March 14, 2003:
The Lyle Hi Alumni Association will begin planning for the “all school reunion” of 2003 on Saturday March 22nd.  The meeting will be at Mildred Lykens’ home at noon (218 Klickitat St.). Anyone interested in brainstorming for the event is encouraged to attend. Needed are ideas for location, dates, prizes, entertainment and, most of all, address updates. Lyle alumni, from all over the Midwest, are inquiring about the dates and showing an interest in attending this year’s reunion. This could be your chance to renew old friendships.

Have you marked your calendar to attend “King Arty and the Knights of the Rad Table” on March 21 or 22? Don’t deprive yourself, or your family, a night of clean wholesome entertainment performed by Dallesport Elementary students in a labor of love.

Get involved and experience a wonderful feeling of pride in your community! Spring is in the air, the wild flowers are blooming, and Easter is coming! The sounds of lawnmowers and weed eaters can be heard again. Did you give thanks for the beautiful rainbow over Lyle the other day? This is the time to gather your castoffs for the Lyle clean-up on April 11 and 12. Also, begin gathering your treasures for the bi-community yard sale to follow soon after. Plan to attend the next Lyle Community Action Council Meeting on March 24th. The agenda will include the aforementioned clean-up and the first-time-ever “bi-community yard sale” along with proposed By-Law updates, etc.

“Graduation Plus One”

Clue # 3 for March:

If Lyle were the target
And you are aiming for me,
Shoot your arrow towards the diamond
And close to me you’ll be.

Lyle History (continued):  Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:
White man and Indian alike caught and broke these excellent riding ponies; they were surefooted, wiry and tough. A small group of men figured they could make some easy change by turning a jack loose with these wild ponies on the range. There was one thing they missed; the noise of his braying scared all the wild cayuses so badly they never stopped running and he wasn’t fleet of foot enough to keep in the race at all.

What a difference 100 years makes. Here are some US statistics for 1902. More than 95 percent of all births in the US took place at home.

Week Ending March 7, 2003:
King Artie and the Knights of the Rad Table” is the production chosen, this year, by the talented students of Dallesport Elementary.  Mark your calendar for the dates of March 21st and 22nd  to enjoy theatrics at it finest! A sneak preview of the costumes created revealed they could be straight out of “Camelot”.  The students are working hard to perfect their lines and performances. We hear tell there will also be some amazing sound effects.  You don’t want to miss this extravaganza!

Clue # 2 for March:

I'm hiding in Zone 2
and waiting for you,
Where people can run
Or just enjoy the sun

Kudos, to the Lyle High students who climbed the big hill to straighten and re-paint  “LYLE”!

Do you know the history of how it was built? This was an initiation project by the freshmen and sophomore classes in the mid ‘50’s. The original sign was the brainchild of this reporter (Barbara) to instill pride in my school and community. So, along with many others, I always look up with pride to see “LYLE” on the hill!

Lyle History (continued):  Originally published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967, as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell:
A nice little old lady arrived here at the local post office fresh from the East. This was all so new to her, names, Indian terms and all that to get used to. She was asked how she got here?  Her answer got many a chuckle, it was, “Oh I just rode in on a coyote”. The term used was, “Cayuse”, but is was all Indian or Greek to her.

There were many bands of wild horses running on the range in 1800’s, they were called the Indian Cayuse by all the early timers.  They had been crossed with the Kentucky that had been imported with the first settlers.

What a difference 100 years makes. Here are some US statistics for 1902. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 miles per hour.
