September 2002

Week of September 27, 2002
A big community thanks to Oren Johnson for weed eating around the Lyle Welcome signs.  Also, a big community thanks to the Lions Club for trash pickup along highway 14 between the Chamberlain Rest Area and the tunnels east of Lyle.  All of this contributes to a more attractive community.

September Sundowners Campout at Beacon Rock honored Shirley Tanner.  Shirley has served as the groups secretary for over 20 years and kept many scrapbooks and albums of the club.  At 91, she says she is going to retire.  The Brashers and the Sorensens served homemade ice cream to the many members and guests.  Guests included Jim and Charlotte Pimley and Steve and Gail Pimley, plus several drop-in day guests.  A climb to the top of Beacon Rock was one of the highlights of the campout.

October is the month that campaigning gets really serious.  For your information, the following nights and locations have been scheduled for Candidates Nights in Klickitat County:

October 7,   Wishram 7.p.m. at the school
October 9,   Trout Lake, 8.p.m., Grange Hall
October 10,  Dallesport, 7.p.m., school cafeteria
October 14,  Bickelton 6:30 p.m., Grange Hall
October 17,  Klickitat, 6:30 p.m., school music room
October 22, Lyle, 6:30 p.m., Lions Community Center
October 24, White Salmon, 7:p.m. at the Library, October 29, Goldendale, 7 p.m.  at the PUD building.

Hopefully, one or more of these nights and areas should fit into your schedule.  Go and listen to the issues and answers and make an educated vote in November.  Don’t forget, if you are not a registered voter, it is your duty as a citizen to pick up a form at The Klickitat County Monitor, Post Office, or Lyle Merc and let your vote count.  If you don’t vote, you don’t have a voice so don’t complain!

Just a Reminder:

The chip site is open for the summer.
Lyle Burn Ban is in effect.
October’s Lyle Community Action Council meeting is Monday, the 28th.  PUD will be the guest speakers.

Chili Cook-off among the county fire districts is October 19th at the Lyle Park Place.  Good Chili, Good Company, Good Fun.  Come and support this event.

November’s council meeting will hold election for three Board positions.  Barbara Sexton and Joy Collins are up for re-election and the vacant position has two candidates, Mildred Lykens and Pam Essley.

Lyle History, as published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967:
Lyle Pioneer History (continued), as recounted for readers by Jesse A. Jewell.  When Lewis and Clark turned in their report to the President about being able to travel overland to the Pacific, mostly following the rivers, it created a new interest in the Oregon Territory.  The report electrified the minds and fired the imagination of the adventurous-a whole new empire to conquer, his for the taking, if only he were big enough to hold it.  The slogan was: Go west, young man-go west!

How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

In last week’s news we addressed the abuse of the chip site.  This week it has come to our attention that a “few upstanding” Lyle citizens are passing bad checks at local businesses.  This abuse is causing problems for those who are not guilty of this unethical practice.  Makes you wonder if it is the same people who feel the rules of the chip site don’t apply to them either.  We personally feel that your names should be posted in public.

On a happy note, the new benches are in place at Lyle Park Place and are very attractive.  Thanks to the Lions Club and Greg Colt Real Estate for their generous donations of these benches.  If you or your business are interested in sponsoring a bench, contact the Lyle Community Action Council. Elections for the Lyle Community Action Council will be the 4th Monday in November.  Two positions, Barbara Sexton and Joy Collins, are up for re-election.  There is one open position.  Pam Essley and Mildred Lykens are running for the open position.

Just a Reminder:
The chip site is open for the summer.
Lyle Burn Ban is in effect.
September’s Lyle Community Action Council meeting is Monday, the 23rd.

Lyle History, as published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967:
Lyle Pioneer History (continued), as recounted for readers by Jesse A. Jewell.  When the first settlers came here, there were a large number of Indians camped on the beaches and up on the flat, even where Castles live.  Most of them were of the Klickitat Tribe.

The abuse of the chip site has generated many calls to the county and to the council. The directions are on a sign at the entrance to the site. It is there for you to use in determining what to leave or what not to leave. If this abuse continues, it is possible that the county will close this site and everyone will lose. It is a privilege for our community to have this site and a shame if we lose it because of a few who chose to disregard the instructions for whatever selfish reason. You know who you are and it is a puzzle that you assume the rules are not for you. This is a violation that you can be prosecuted for and if you are seen disposing of garbage, yard debris, metal shavings, or anything that is not listed on the sign you will be reported to the county for prosecution. The deposit of black plastic bags with the items we've listed above is not acceptable and those of you who want to continue to have this site are encouraged to watch for and report anyone abusing the site.  Please contact Barbara (phone: 365-5374/e-mail: madison@gorge.net) or Joy (phone: 365-5102/e-mail: ojoy@gorge.net) or anyone on the Community Council if you see someone leaving unacceptable items. NOTHING SHOULD BE LEFT IN A PLASTIC BAG!!!

Lyle Community Action Council is sponsoring a Chili Cook-off on October 19th among all the fire departments in the county. The public is invited to come and support your community's fire department's entry. Equipment from the various fire departments will be on display for the kids to learn about their functions. This is a fund-raiser for the individual fire departments and will be held at the Lyle Park Place. Please join us.

Elections for the Lyle Community Action Council will the 4th Monday in November. Two positions, Barbara Sexton and Joy Collins are up for re-election. There is one open position. Two people are running for the open position, Pam Essley and Mildred Lykens.

Just a Reminder: The Chip Site is open for the Summer. Lyle's burn ban is in effect.

September's Lyle Community Action Council meeting is Monday, the 23rd.

Lyle History, as published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967:
Lyle Pioneer History (con't) as recounted for readers by Jesse A. Jewell. Lewis and Clark were here. Lewis and Clark camped at the mouth of our Klickitat River for several days. They must have liked the Indian smoked salmon. It is reported that they had trouble getting enough food along the way. Is it too unlikely to think that they might have overeaten of this delicious kippered delicacy and had to stay over until they felt fit to travel again?

If you woke up breathing, congratulations! You have another chance!

An Upstanding, Outstanding, and Standing room only crowd gathered at the Lyle Lions Community Center last Thursday night. The agenda was to hear Candidates for Federal, State and Local offices present their platforms. Intelligent questions were asked and answered. The crowd showed respect (with restraint) for the speakers and came prepared both to listen and learn and become educated voters for the Primary Election on September 17th. Nineteen contenders spoke to a crowd of almost 100.

Several ran unopposed and chose to describe the changes they had been able to accomplish in their last term. In the positions that had incumbents and contenders, the audience was educated, provoked and entertained by some very interesting dialog.  The event ran long, but was so intense that most of the audience remained for the entire slate.   Remember it is your right, your privilege and your duty to VOTE!

Crime Stats for August: Suspicious circumstances 3, abandon vehicle 2, motor vehicle accident (non-injury) 2, disorderly conduct 5, citizens assist 3, theft 2, 911 hang-ups 3, animal complaints 5, driving while suspended 1, suspicious person 2, Hulk inspections 1, fraud complaint 1, and domestic disputes 3 for a grand total of 33.

Lyle Park Place

You may have noticed that the ground cover has been delivered for under the playground equipment. Watch for the two new benches that will soon be installed, thanks to The Lyle Lions Club and Greg Colt Realty.

Just a reminder:

The chip site is open for the summer. The chip site is located in the southeast corner of Lyle on the riverside of the railroad tracks. You can access the site by taking the tunnel underneath the railroad tracks. Turn right passed the sewer plant. Please read the sign giving instructions for what can and cannot be left.

Lyle’s burn “ban” is in effect.

Music at the Merc. – Saturday September 12, 2002

September’s Community Action Council meeting is Monday September 23rd.

Lyle History, as published in The Enterprise, July 6, 1967:
Lyle Pioneer History (continued), as recounted by Jesse A. Jewell.  The kids asked, “How could you sit and face him like that?” To which she replied, “if I hadn’t he would have scalped all of us without a doubt.” This shows how rough it was at times, though history proves there was far less hair-raising than our TV and movies picture.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite… government program.
