Families Of Prisoners
Click here for a list of resources available for Washington families with an incarcerated individual. More information will be provided soon. A good website to check is the Family and Corrections Network at http://www.fcnetwork.org/ . Among their resources are free printable brochures and handouts for families and children with incarcerated parents. Local schools offer support for students with an incarcerated parent and training for staff to help those children. Ask for that support. The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction has produced a program for all public schools to help guide them in services for children who have parents in jail.
Another good source of information and support is through the Department of Social and Health Services. Often it is hard for families who have a family member in jail or prison to handle finances, keep in touch with their loved one, care for their children and keep the family safe and healthy. Children with parents that are locked up need support, as do caretakers for those children. In addition, when a family member returns from jail or prison, the return home can also be challenging.

Intervention ranges from 8 to 12 one-hour sessions on up to 30 sessions of direct service for more difficult situations. Sessions are held in clinic settings as outpatient therapy and as a home-based model.

Skamania Klickitat Early Learning Coalition
The Skamania Klickitat Early Learning Coalition formed several years ago to address a very real need---many children enter school in Skamania and Klickitat County lacking critical early learning skills. These aren't just knowing their A-B-C's and 1-2-3's. Children do their best in life when they have been provided abundant learning opportunities even before they take that first exhilarating step into school. Most babies, toddlers and children regularly exposed to music, reading, games, outdoor play, drawing and other everyday activities with a caring adult often enter school way ahead of the curve-ready, able and willing to learn.
Members include representatives of Ft. Vancouver Regional Library, Skamania Klickitat Community Network, Mid Columbia Children's Council, WeeCare of Stevenson, Klickitat and Skamania County Public Health, White Salmon Pre-school, Educational Service District 112 and White Salmon and Stevenson-Carson School Districts.
Our Mission:
To prepare our youngest children for success by connecting families and communities.
This is achieved by:
- Emphasizing the crucial role of parents as their child's first teacher
- Encouraging community based learning opportunities for children and families
- Developing innovative methods of sharing knowledge, information and programs that contribute towards every child's health, development and future school success
- Serving as advocates for the purpose of educating our communities about the importance of early childhood education.
Our Vision
In Skamania and Klickitat counties our youngest children are valued, nurtured and prepared for success in school and life by community investment in early learning.
Strong Families
Presented through Central Washington Comprehensive Mental Health. This is a free program open to all parents. Emphasis is on problem solving, limits and consequences and positive discipline. The program typically runs for 7 weeks, with two sessions per week for a total of 13. Free child care is provided.
Strengthening Families
The Strengthening Families Program for Parents and Youth 10-14 Years is a nationally
recognized curriculum that provides parent, youth and family education. The model is designed to be delivered in local communities for groups of 7-12 families.
Educational programs that bring parents and their children together in learning environments strengthen entire families. Healthy parent-child communication reduces the risks of both substance abuse and teen pregnancy among teenagers, factors that are related to youth violence, depression, school failure and cycles of poverty. WSU Cooperative Extension offers the Strengthening Families Program as a model learning program for families.
Parents and children participate in this program both together and separately. Strengthening Families is designed for high risk families. It provides science-based curriculum in three main areas: parenting skills, children's life skills and family life skills. The program is offered in seven sessions, with four "booster" workshops available.
Programs are available for parents of 10 -14 year olds. Please call 1-866-631-1997 for details.
