Jai Uttal's eclectic East-meets-West sound blends the devotional temple chants of ancient India with modern jazz improvisation and world music rhythms. Geoffrey Gordon is a featured percussionist on major motion pictures and in Broadway productions.
A day long chanting workshop is a vocal journey through the sounds of ancient India. This is an exploration of the heart. No previous experience is necessary. Jai and Geoffrey have been offering chanting workshops internationally for the past 8 years. Call Lorin Keiffer at 541-386-1891 for information.

Granada Theatre Now a Nonprofit

One of the grand old buildings in downtown The Dalles, the Granada Theatre, will reopen later this spring as a non-profit arts and cultural center.
The 70-year-old theater was restored with the hope of creating a place for families, children and students of all ages.  There have been big successes,  but, unfortunately, those successes haven't been reflected in the bottom line.   The cost of "big name" performers tends to be so expensive that even a well attended show--at reasonable ticket prices--ends up losing money. Especially since it's costly to maintain an old building like

the Granada.
Rather than simply shut the doors, they've reorganized as a non-profit called The Granada Theatre Foundation, devoted to preserving local history while adding a new cultural component to downtown.
Among other uses, "I'd love to see this as a performing arts and cultural center for K-12," general manager Tina Cady said.  "We don't need to spend money for buses to send our kids to Portland."
The first fundraiser for the Granada Theatre Foundation will be February 23rd, at 7:00 PM. featuring the Portland Opera Company in
Puccini to Porter.
The concert will feature ensemble selections from Rossini, Lakme, Pagliacci, Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, and Broadway show tunes from West Side Story, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Gerschwin and Cole Porter.
Tickets may be purchased at: The Granada Theatre, Klindts Booksellers, Waucoma Books or charge by phone at 541-296-3315.
Meanwhile, the Granada's looking for volunteers - contact them via their web site at http://www.thegranada.com,  email Tina@thegranada.com, or phone 541-298-4710.
