HOusing for PEople, Inc. (HOPE) is a non-profit organization that came into being in 1989 when the last local church in Hood River that was willing to serve the homeless was forced to close its doors due to security reasons.  The pastor of that church called community meetings to discuss the increasing problem of homelessness in the community.  Out of those public meetings HOPE was born.  A pledge walk and fundraiser was organized and enough money was raised for HOPE to apply for its non-profit status.  That status was granted on Jan 2, 1990.  HOPE has since gone  on to provide much of the affordable housing in the Mid-Columbia region of Oregon and Washington. This affordable housing consists of 5 apartment complexes.  The four in Oregon are managed by an outside property management firm and one in Washington managed by a contracted individual.  HOPE also heads up an emergency voucher program, which provides temporary relief to those in need of emergency shelter, food, or gasoline.  HOPE is also a community development corporation, which has peeked outside of the affordable housing aspect of community development and has been the grant administrator for local Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Projects.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide safe, decent, and affordable housing and to address other community development needs for people in the Mid-Columbia region.

Company Profile

The three main tiers of HOPE (staff, board and members) are a group of individuals that work as a team toward the mission of the organization.  These citizens come together to help HOPE help the community in which we live.

Staff: HOPE has a five person staff consisting of four regular employees and one AmeriCorps/Vista volunteer.  The full-time positions are Executive Director, Administrative Bookkeeper, Self Help Program Manager, and Resident Services Coordinator.  The volunteer position is Homebuyer Outreach Coordinator

Board: Most of HOPE's board members have been with the organization since its inception ten years ago! HOPE's board consists of twelve dedicated individuals that donate their time and energy to HOPE's mission and meet monthly toward that end.   The board is further broken into three committees that focus on specific areas of HOPE operations.  These committees are the Development, Personnel, and Finance committees.  The Development committee meets bi-monthly and the other two committees meet based on need of the organization.

Members: HOPE's membership consists of at least 25 members and is broadly representative of the Mid-Columbia region and also represents a variety of community interests.  HOPE's full membership (board included) meets annually
