Sexual assault is any forced or coerced sexual act. It can be anything from unwanted touching to rape. It is an act of violence and abusing power, not the result of an uncontrollable sexual urge. Over half of all sexual assaults occur between people who know each other, but the rapist can be anyone.
A rapist chooses victims who are vulnerable, not because of what they do, say or wear. Victims are often vulnerable because they know and trust their assailants. Tips about avoiding isolated places do not protect these victims. Understanding that men and women have a right to set sexual limits - and no right to force change in others limits - is the first step to ending rape.
If you are assaulted, do whatever you need to do to get out alive. Afterwards, go to a safe place, and call for assistance.
No on deserves to be abused either physically, sexually, emotionally, or verbally. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. You have a right to your own body. You have a right not to be forced to do anything that you do not want to do. You have the right to seek help if you have been abused. You have the right to say no to unwanted touching.
Does your boyfriend/girlfriend put you down, act extremely jealous, make sexist jokes, force you to have sex, or get angry at you regularly? Is he/she cruel to you physically, sexually, or emotionally?
These things are NOT love, they are ABUSE!
Temporary Restraining Orders Allow You To Stay In Your Own Home
Temporary Restraining Order (T.R.O.) forms, with an instruction booklet, are available at the Trial Court Operation County Courthouse.
This Order, after being served on the assailant, provides the victim with temporary custody of children, and restrains the assailant from the home, school, place of work, etc.
The police MUST arrest if they have reason to believe that a domestic assault, or threat of assault, has occured, or if your restraining order has been violated.
We are here to give you information, and support your decisions.
