Friends of Goldendale Observatory

Annual Meeting

November 1 2003

Update from October Board Meeting

Jim White read notes and updated the group on happenings from the September Board Meeting (attached).   There were no corrections to the notes, but there were questions asked by the group, since there were a lot of new members, unfamiliar with business of the Friends.

  • Ty Ross, who lives next door to the Observatory, expressed some concern about the lack of overnight facilities for people with Motor homes etc.  There was some discussion of camping possibilities or increased parking.  Steve mentioned that he had been looking into that.  There was a question about the size of the Park (5 acres) and whether expanded parking could be provided for.  Steve noted that the remainder of the Park was steeper ground, not really suitable.
  • There was a suggestion that local stores (76 station was mentioned) would be willing to stock pamphlets about the Observatory – they get questions about the Park
  • There was some discussion of making sure visitors knew as much as possible about local businesses.  Don Hardin noted that the Observatory keeps a list of local places to stay (Motels etc.) for visitors that ask.
  • Some asked why the Park is not open more hours.  Steve explained that it’s due to lack of staffing.  There was discussion of helping with that, possibly by assisting the state in financing an assistant.

Elections

The floor was opened for nominations for Officers for the next three years.  Two slates of candidates were nominated:

  • Dana Peck, President
  • Kevin Evans, Senior Vice President
  • Kurt Ross, Vice President
  • Shay Davenport, Treasurer
  • Brian Enstead, Secretary

  • Jim White, President
  • Dana Peck, Senior Vice President
  • Tom Nathe, Vice President
  • Brian Richardson, Treasurer
  • Mike Gimmey, Secretary

The slate of Peck/Evans/Ross/Davenport/Enstead was elected by a show of hands.  Old and new Officers will meet on December 6 to accomplish the changeover.

Telescope Drawing Plans for the Evening

Jim and Brian described plans for the telescope drawing in the evening.  All eligible membership forms will be placed in a box, and we’ll have one young person from the audience draw the name, after the forms are mixed and stirred.  We’ll either deliver the scope to the winner, or ship it.  David West offered that his business could ship the scope if necessary.

(Note:  During the evening, members Jim White, Brian Richardson, Tom Nathe, and Don Hardin were present for the drawing.  One of the Observatory’s visitors that evening, a young lady named Jamie (didn’t get her last name) drew the name of the winner:  Mary Ellen Carey/Levine from Seattle.  Brian Richardson gave Jamie a small gift for making the drawing.  Jim will contact Mary Ellen to arrange delivery of the telescope).

Coke Machine

We have not been able to stock the machine since we don’t have a local volunteer to do so.  Jim has a volunteer, Pat Smith from Goldendale.  Jim will work with Pat and the new Board members to work this out.  Some mentioned that the location may not be the best for the machine, in the Dome.  Steve will need to be consulted here, there may not be another acceptable place on the premises.

Plans for 2004

We deferred this discussion for the new Board to take up.
