August - November 2005

A co-operative project of The Larks and other bird observers in the Gorge

updated 30 Nov. '05

Greater White-fronted Goose - 2 on 10 Aug., adults, with feral domestic geese, grazing on lawn at the Skamania Co. fairgrounds, Rock Creek Cove, Stevenson (BMcK, SJ). These may be the same ones that were here last winter and spring (did they ever leave?).

Canada Goose (small race / sp.) – 1 on 22 Nov., with 11 Canadas, on the Columbia R. just out from the mouth of Boat Works Basin, along the Hood River waterfront. This bird is easily < ˝ the size of geese it accompanies, has stubby bill, short neck, and breast is just a little paler than sides, flanks (but is not dark as in Cackling). Do not notice a white ring at base of neck (SJ).

(Black) Brant – 1 on 25 Sept., at the Klickitat R. mouth, foraging in at-the-surface “seaweed” with 17 Canada Geese, at 16:45 to 17:45; brant is very small, about 1/3 the body bulk of the Canadas. Scoped it close as 75m. and while it was standing in shallow water, preening, noted that black extends from breast right down onto belly at least to the space between the legs. This is a first record for Klickitat County (SJ).

“How splendid to see in this morning’s light (26 Sept.’05, 09:00) a solitary Brant grazing with Canadians on the Klickitat River mouth just off the east bank moving into Rio Columbia. Janet and I were delighted…” (JaE, PM).

Many, if not most, of the drakes have “dirty” sides smudged with dusky—still in partial eclipse? No Greaters tagging along. There were also 4 Lessers diving in the V Cove further west (SJ).

~50 on 22 Nov., along the Hood River waterfront: 5 in Boat Works Basin and ~45 off w. end of The Hook. See ~230 more scaup, sp. present off The Hook’s n. and w. sides and off Wells Is. (SJ).

scaup, sp. – 65 on 12 Oct., on the Columbia R. downstream from Memaloose Is., viewed from Major Creek mouth—in two flocks of 48 and 17; they were too distant to identify to species (SJ).

15-20 on 29 Oct., diving in Waucoma Basin, Hood River waterfront, with hundreds of coots; poor light conditions and time preclude specific I.D. (SJ).

41 on 9 Nov., distant off The Hook, 19 with W. Grebe raft, at ~13:30, and off the vacant lot to w. of the Luhr-Jensen plant, 22 at ~13:55, along the Hood River waterfront (SJ).

~230 on 22 Nov., distant off e-ne. shore of Wells Is. (160) and off the n. side of The Hook (70), along the Hood River waterfront, ~16:00-45 (SJ).

Surf Scoter1 on 1 Oct., female plumage, off nw. corner of The Hook, Hood River waterfront; it had it’s head tucked most of the time (you could see part of one of the two whitish face patches, even so), but twice, briefly, it looked around and I had O.K. scope views. At one point it raised it’s wings over it’s back in a kind of shrug and there were no white wing-patches. It kept company with 18 N. Shovelers and 7 Greater Scaup, all loafing; scoter was larger than the shovelers, but did not dwarf them the way a White-winged would have (SJ).

2 on 12 Oct., female plumage, on the Columbia R. just downstream from Memaloose Is., viewed from clifftop above RR tracks at Major Creek mouth, from ~17:20 to 17:30. (Ducks are on the Klickitat Co., WA / Wasco Co., OR line.) They were accompanying a raft of scaup at quite a distance, but I watched them diving and noticed that wings were used—at least partially open—at the start of the dive (like Long-tailed Duck and alcids) and later saw both flapping their wings while preening: no white wing patches. Scoters appeared to be much the same size as the scaup, all dark with white face patches; the bill shape was more “Roman-nosed” than the dabbler-duck-like bill of female Black Scoter (SJ).

1 on 2 Nov., HY, along the Hood River waterfront (RR); gleaned from OBOL.

White-winged Scoter1 on 26 Oct., male, close in to and just sw. of nw. corner of The Hook, Hood River waterfront, at ~17:30; loafing with big raft of W. Grebes and smaller numbers of scaup. Excellent viewing conditions: the rather small but conspicuous white crescent that sweeps upward back from bottom of the eye provided immediate I.D., but this male also stretched it’s wings and displayed the white secondaries. Even details of the bill were pretty obvious, the dark knob with nostril at its base, culminating in the relatively thin-looking orange distal ľ plus. It’s body bulk was at least half again larger than the Lesser Scaup (SJ).

1 on 7 Nov., male, on the Columbia R. just upstream from the mouth of Eagle Creek and above Bonneville Dam, Multnomah Co., OR. It was viewed from vicinitiy of the Bonneville Dam lookout; the record has been documented with a nice digiscoped photograph. “[Drake] was just over the line on the Oregon side”(TH).

1 on 12 Nov., male, on the Columbia R. above Bonneville Dam, Skamania Co., WA. It was seen “hanging loosely with a flock of W. Grebes…near the same area where the 2 Ancient Murrelets were hanging out” a year ago, viewed “by scope from the small hill just above the dam itself.” (KK); gleaned from Tweeters.

Bufflehead - 2 on 13 Aug., female or HY plumage (suspect the latter), e. side of Klickitat R. mouth, loafing in shallows at edge of low-water exposed "seaweed" bed, at 12:15. The elliptical, white patches, low on the cheeks, looked a little blurry around the edges and seemed smaller than in an adult female (SJ). Very early, these two, as most Buffleheads don't arrive in the Gorge until October. That said, one year ago on 24 Aug.’04, a female-plumaged bird flew in to the Hood R. mouth and was closely observed there (BMcK, SJ).

~30 on 22 Oct., off The Hook, Hood River waterfront (CJF, SF).

1 on 26 Oct., male, in Waucoma Basin, Hood River waterfront; with raft of hundreds of coots, et al (SJ).

12 on 29 Oct., (6 drakes, 6 hens) off The Hook to n-nw., on the Hood River waterfront (SJ).

1 on 9 Oct., female plumage, loafing on little rocky point (exposed due to low water level) just out from The Lunch Grove, along the Bingen riverfront, at 14:30 (SJ).

27 on 2 Nov., total of several small flocks that flew in to shallows surrounding n. most sandbar islet at the Hood R. mouth, including one drake in close to full breeding plumage, the first I’ve noted this fall. Coming in to roost site at days end, ~16:45 to 16:55 (SJ).

1 on 28 Oct., heard only, calling at pre-dusk from s. slope of Burdoin Mtn. to n. above BSI, Bingen; one heard calling from the same slope at ~14:30 on 16 Nov. on a clear-skies sunny afternoon (SJ).

Grey Partridge – 2 on 5 or 6 Nov., hwy. 206 e. of Condon, near the Morrow Co. line, in Gilliam Co. (CK, PTS).

Ring-necked Pheasant – 1 on 9 Oct., heard only, calling cock (“flight” call) to e-ne. of intersection N. Harbour Dr. with Lakeview Blvd., beyond ne. corner of Bingen Pond; this species has become scarce around Bingen Pond, probably due to major habitat alterations—there is much less weedy, brushy habitat now than there was a couple years ago—and frequent off-leash dog walking around the pond, especially by hunting dogs (SJ).

40 on 6 Nov., south of Lonerock, Gilliam Co., OR—“just released?” (CK, PTS).

~225 on 4 Nov., “went to The Hook again [on 4 Nov. and found ~225 W. Grebes.] They were in a long raft a little ways into the river. Many had their heads tucked under their wings, taking a nap, so it is possible there may have been a Clark’s” (TH). Hood River waterfront.

Clark’s Grebe – 1 on 6 Nov., tentative ID; above The Dalles Dam, Klickitat Co., WA, with raft of 40 Westerns, at 16:45, in rather poor, fading light. Nonetheless, I could see that bill was bright yellow-gold and that sides and flanks were paler grey than the adjacent Westerns, suffused with whitish diagonal streaks where these feathers were fluffed up over leading edge of folded wing. So, although the lighting conditions were deteriorating, these two points still stood out when the Clark’s was compared with adjacent Westerns. Distance was too great to be able to see details of feather colouring around eye and base of the bill (SJ).

1 on 8 Nov., still present above The Dalles Dam, with a raft of 57 Westerns, 10:00 to 10:53 on a sunny, calm morning. Once again lighting conditions at our Klickitat Co. viewpoint were less than ideal, as the grebes were backlit this time. The yellow-gold bill, along with paler grey sides and flanks with a suffusion of white streaking, were noticed on one bird, however, and staying with this Clark’s, we both had quick looks at the white spot on the lores when the scope was zoomed full bore to 60 power. There is always the possibility that this bird was an intermediate or hybrid, as the distance and viewing conditions made certain ID elusive (BH, SJ).

1 on 22 Oct., The Hook, Hood River waterfront (CJF, SF).

219 on 6 Nov., counted roosting on the 3 steel transmission towers above The Dalles Dam, Klickitat Co., WA, at 16:30 (84 on the e. tower, 76 on the central one, and 59 on the w.). These numbers continued to increase as the light decreased, with more cormorants arriving, circling the towers a time or two before choosing their spot for the night (SJ).

1 on 18 Nov., imm., flew by going n. along trail on e. side of Willow Cove riparian, perching in a Lombardy poplar where I had an O.K. scope view. It was medium-sized, had a light dusky-brown, rather narrow band at tip of rectrices, below a wider dark blackish-brown band. I did not see any white tips to rectrices. Suspect it was a female Sharp-shinned Hawk. This was in the Willow Creek Wildlife Area, Gilliam Co., OR, at 14:40 (SJ).

Later, at 09:00, hear the distress calls of a flicker being harassed by a raptor off to the nw. of the hut at n. edge of the abandoned nursery beds; within 10 min., when I drive past, a flicker flies from conifer sapling top over to the forest edge and a kestrel flies w. at this same spot. Seems likely that kestrel was the harassing raptor. Wind River Experimental Forest, Trout Creek Division, GPNF, Skamania Co., WA. At 15:49 on 9 Sept., see male fly to broken-off top of tall conifer >100 m. to w. of entrance gate to the canopy crane; this is at the interface between old growth forest, T. T. Munger RNA, and a big meadow of the abandoned nursery beds, in the same general area as one seen yesterday (AW, SJ).

1 on 17 Nov., along Bates Rd., between Bristol and N. Major Creek roads. Kestrel stooped successfully on a vole and was immediately chased by a Merlin, but the latter did not take the prey from the former; rather, kestrel perched on a utility pole and proceeded to dine. This bird is hanging out in vicinity of a kestrel box where young were raised this past summer. Another kestrel is still present in the vicinity of a second kestrel box further e-ne. along Bates Rd., a little n. of the jct. with N. Major Creek Rd.; young were fledged from this box earlier as well (DG).

Peregrine Falcon - 3 on 10 Aug., circling over Rock Creek Cove in Stevenson, Skamania Co., WA, 10:13 to 10:16. Scolding swallows alerted us to passage overhead of the first two, going w.; note size difference so may be a pair? Next hear begging (?) "whine" calls and see 3 Peregrines circling to n. of creek mouth; one, presumably a juv., intersects with another several times, fluttering, nearly hovering in intimate proximity to the other (parent?) falcon. Scene suggests adult with mate and a juv. or adult with 2 juv. (BMcK, SJ).

1 on 14 Aug., male along the Bingen riverfront, atop steel transmission tower at se. corner SDS timber stacks at w. side of V Cove mouth. First noticed there at 07:45 and still there at 13:08, but saw it fly off at 09:25 going downriver; it returned, however, within about 5 minutes (M&RB, BB, SJ).

1 on 1 Sept., adult, on steel transmission tower, se. corner SDS timber stacks, Bingen riverfront; when first seen ~10:30 it was perching at the top on the s. most insulator arm and did nothing when 2 Steller’s Jays flew in around the tower. Later, at 11:44, it is perched much lower down on a cross arm, eating a prey item, possibly a jay; half a dozen Steller’s Jays were around it on cross braces of the tower, ascending to the top to launch into flight out over the river. About 12:10 it was still perched down on a lower cross brace (JA, SJ).

1 on 2 Oct., adult (apparently male: all dark helmeted head, small when seen in flight) tearing into prey item on furthest-out sandbar sliver, w. side of the Hood R. mouth, on the Hood River waterfront, at 14:40; I could see once, when carcass remnant was lifted slightly in the feeding process, that prey was a good-sized bird with pale underside to wings and with a wingspan similar in length to falcon’s. At 14:50 peregrine flew off, coming s. at first, then circling back to w., n. and continuing on to e., lost to scope view when nearing the Hood River toll bridge (SJ).

1 on 5 Oct., adult (apparently female: blackish head with conspicuous whitish patch extending up from shoulder area onto auriculars behind the rather wide dark moustache; size looks big) perching on cut-short, small log on furthest-out sandbar sliver at Hood R. mouth, facing shore, from at least 17:30 to 17:55—still present there when I left at 17:55 (SJ).

1 on 9 Oct., adult (probable male: looks helmeted with little upward dent of whitish pointing toward auriculars, and looks small—but poor lighting conditions: nearly silhouetted) perched on the e.most horizontal insulator arm of steel transmission tower at se. corner of SDS’s timber stacks, Bingen riverfront, at 14:00. It is gone by 14:18 (SJ).

1 on 8 Nov., adult, flew upriver to perch on one of 3 steel transmission towers above The Dalles Dam, Klickitat Co., WA, at ~10:15. It was carrying prey that had already been partially eaten, which it began to pluck while our scopes were trained on it. The bird prey was about the size of a robin or flicker—you could see it’s dangling leg and foot (BH, SJ).

1 on 9 Nov., adult with tawny wash over breast, perched on s. tower of the Hood River toll bridge, seen from walkway in front of the Hood River Inn at ~10:30, and seen there again at 16:22 as I drove n. across the bridge. At 11:30 this peregrine was scoped perching on the e. side sandbar at the Hood R. mouth; in a minute it flew nw. to perch again, this time on a little drift log on the n. most sandbar at w. side of the rivermouth, where it preened for 10 minutes or more. Suspect bird is a female, judging by size and heft (SJ).

One ad. was observed standing in shallow water just off the w. side sandbar, with it’s bill open and with the lower mandible held underwater; it took slow steps and every so often snapped bill shut. It appeared to be “sifting” the extremely muddy waters for prey, much like Black Skimmers do (except the gull was not doing this foraging manoeuvre aerially). The river was turbid after the first heavy fall rain, which included some flooding upriver (SJ).

Thayer’s Gull1 on 4 Oct., HY, loafing with other gulls at se. tip of w. side sandbar, Klickitat R. mouth; good close scope study, good light—has a rounded crown when feathers are relaxed, fluffed up and a very slight, all-dark bill for a “large-size” gull, bill noticeably more slender, less deep than the other 2 HY gulls that I identified as Herring; the bills of all 3 are noticeably less deep than the Glaucous-winged / hybrid gulls that these 3 were associated with. On close inspection note that forehead and crown of this HY Thayer’s is a bit paler than rest of head and underparts, and is speckled with a suffusion of slightly darker markings; rest of head, neck and underparts are an unmarked grey-brown; markings on wing are less contrasting between the lighter and darker browns than on HY Herrings adjacent (the Herrings have two blackish-brown bars spanning wing coverts made up of crescents near tips of feathers; the Thayer’s does not have that kind of contrast.) Legs are pinkish-grey. Tail is dark brown, similar in tone to primaries. Saw bird fly out ~25 m. to feed on a dead fish floating in the shallows and it looked like the primaries were not all or solid dark above and rather paler below, but this look was relatively fleeting and unsatisfying. The overall impression was that the Thayer’s plumage was a little paler and more muted than the two Herrings; both species were slighter in body bulk / size than Glaucous-winged & hybrids, but noticeably bigger than the Californias (SJ).

1 on 11 Oct., HY, loafing with other gulls and coming to “chum” tossed out onto parking lot for them—so it was scope-studied as close as 15-20 m., on the e. side sandbar at the Hood R. mouth, 17:00 to 17:24. Note that body bulk is only a bit larger than ad. California Gulls; it has overall paler and less contrasty light brown / dark brown intricate markings on wing coverts than HY Californias and bill is pretty much all black, much slighter than Glaucous-winged / hybrids but not that much more robust than Californias. Round head shape; head, neck, breast and belly rather pale grey-brown—shades of beige, with some slightly darker, diffuse, tiny streaks on crown especially and with underparts essentially unmarked. In flight, underside of primaries pale, darkening some at tips of outer primaries; on upperside have a quick glimpse of pale, beige stripes formed by inner webs of primaries in muted contrast with medium-brown outerwebs. Compared to HY Californias, primaries of on-the-ground Thayer’s are noticeably lighter brown with pale beige edgings. This bird “jumped out at me” as soon as I came across it in scanning the gull flock (SJ).

1 on 21 Oct., HY bird, at the Klickitat R. mouth, at 1700; may well be the same bird as one seen here earlier, on 4 Oct; 1 on 28 Oct., HY, at Klickitat R. mouth, again suspect this is same bird as one seen 4 & 21 Oct. (SJ).

1 on 22 Nov., adult, at the Hood R. mouth, at ~15:00. Well seen, preening, loafing with small flock of Glaucous-winged Gulls and hybirds: Rounded top of head / crown and small bill, for gull’s size; brighter pink legs than the Glaucous-wing / hybrids and Thayer’s is noticeably smaller in size; eye looks dark, rather than pale; mantle a similar grey to adjacent Glaucous-wings. Primary tips on folded wings are black with white spots; when it flew primary tips looked vertically striped, black and white (SJ).

Hutton’s Vireo – 1 on 28 Oct and again 17 Nov., heard-only, calling in the same spot along a trail in the Trout Lake NAP, “…a somewhat nasal ‘wheeeer’ scolding call…Janet glimpsed a small bird fly out of a Douglas fir, but I [PM] never saw it…Curiously, the presumed same bird was solitary, i.e., NOT in a “mixed winter flock” as expected…The only bird sound I was able to extract from remembered impressions was the couple occasions we’ve heard a pair [along this same trail] a few summers ago, dissing our presence. I’ve listened to three separately-published recordings and found only one recording with a similar scolding whine of a sound, captured after the usual/expected, repeated, variably-pitched, single-note phrases” (JaE, PM). In this same general vicinity, a little futher east, Hutton’s Vireos have been encountered on several occasions during summer in the last few years, including an adult carrying food (JaE, PM; KG; SJ).

Steller’s Jay17 on 1 Sept., migrants flying e. to w. along / over riparian at s. shore Bingen Pond, continuing on to sw. to the steel transmission tower at the se. corner of SDS’s timber stacks, across the V Cove, at 11:44; some of the jays straggled out over the Columbia heading s. to Oregon, others angled back to the n. toward Bingen. A Peregrine Falcon was plucking / eating prey (probably a jay) on a lower crossbar of the tower, while about 6 jays ascended the tower from crossbars close to the peregrine; one of the jays at top of the tower was a W. Scrub-Jay, apparently also migrating. The first Steller’s was seen at the pond at ~09:00, flying high, going n-ne., over e. side; after that a single was seen flying in various directions 3 times; at 09:48 six flew s-sw. into cottonwoods and L. Poplars at e-se. corner, then continued on to s. toward The Lunch Grove (cottonwoods on n. bank of the Columbia); about 10:25 saw 13-15 flying w-sw. toward the V Cove from L. Poplars at s. side of the pond; some of these “milled about” aerially and did not cross the Columbia, but flew in various directions around the sw. corner of Bingen Pond. Thus, the 17 that came along the s. shore later may well have included some of the birds I’d seen moving toward the river earlier (SJ).

70 on 24 Sept., sixty-nine migrating s. along the Rock Creek corridor, from hwy. 14 north ~10.75 mi. to the bridge to Roscoe Imrie’s farmyard, in Klickitat Co., WA; 33 were counted straggling s. over the large backwater “lake” at the creek mouth, from 12:22 to 12:35. We counted at least 36 additional birds (in small flocks, 2-8 per flock, plus 2 singles), from 12:40 to 14:45, mostly on the move s. over or through creek riparian or stopping briefly on rock outcroppings upslope to e. above Rock Creek Rd., some of the latter hopping out into the grass. Rock Creek is at the e. edge of the Columbia Hills IBA. The 70th jay was noted ~11:30 crossing hwy. 14, from s. to n., about 5 mi. e-ne. of John Day Dam, 0.6 mi. e. of jct. with Towal Rd. This exodus may have something to do with the oak mast failure in the area (BR, SJ).

12 on 25 Sept., moving s. over Hoctor Rd. at crest of the Goodnoe Hills (e. end of the Columbia

Hills and to w. above the Rock Creek corridor ), where road turns sharply to s. and begins descent down to jct. with Old Hwy 8 and Goodnoe Station Rd., in the Columbia Hills IBA (DG, RG).

2 on 13 Nov., below John Day Dam, Sherman Co., OR (PTS, ABW).

Blue Jay1 on 6 Oct., heard only, calling twice about 100 m. distant at St. Cloud Recreation Area MAPS station, Skamania Co., WA, at 13:32; banding activity was temporarily interrupted to search along the trail in the direction calls were heard from, some “pshing” was tried, but we did not get a look at the bird, nor did we hear any further calling, in this forest of big Black Cottonwood, Oregon Ash and Red Alder. The first call heard was the “jaaay” call familiar to both of us and instantly recognised; a couple minutes later a second recognisable call was heard, one not so easy to spell out (CJF, SJ).

Western Scrub-Jay - 10 on 14 Aug., flying e-w. along riparian at s. side of Bingen Pond, mid-morning (M&RB, SJ).

2 on 1 Sept., with 17 Steller’s Jays, moving e. to w. over the riparian along s. side Bingen Pond at 11:44; one was scoped atop the steel transmission tower at se. corner SDS’s timber stacks with several Steller’s that launched themselves out over the Columbia, heading s. to Oregon. I think the scrub-jay was migrating with these Steller’s (SJ).

3 on 3 Sept., three together at the hawk banding station, Bonney Butte, Hood River Co., OR (SK, DS).

1 on 12 Sept. and again on 20 Sept., along Willard Springs Trail, Conboy Lake NWR (KG); this is not a site where this species occurs regularly.

As of 13 Sept., “scrub-jays (new molt adults and HY birds, with slightly shorter beaks) quickly spy and aggressively collect, in fairly rigid pecking order, raw peanuts that are set out” at a feeding station along N. Columbus Ave., s. of the Little Klickitat R. crossing in Goldendale (DL).

1 on 16 Sept., at Leidl Park, where Glenwood Hwy. crosses the Klickitat R. (KG); this too is a pioneering site.

“The other day Paul saw a scrub jay burying something in the yard. When he went to investigate—it was a moth ball!”(PM); 21 Sept. e.mail message from JaE in White Salmon.

2 on 24 Sept., flying with straggling flock of 33 Steller’s Jays, moving s. along sparse riparian at e. side of backwater “lake” at Rock Creek mouth, Klickitat Co., WA, at 12:30. Their behaviour suggests that they are migrating with the Steller’s (BR, SJ).

1 on 25 Sept., at the Bonney Butte hawkwatch site, Hood River Co., OR (DAA).

1 on 2 Oct. in Arlington, Gilliam Co., OR, a first record for the county. “I saw it flying over, or more properly, flying around [in vicinity of the restaurant]. It was fairly high up, flying back and forth, apparently hawking insects. [Later] we saw the jay feeding on the ground. I figured it was just a matter of time before I saw a scrub-jay in [Gilliam] Co., because a couple of years earlier I had seen them at least once, and I think twice, between Biggs and Rufus in Sherman Co.” (DF). Across the Columbia R. in Klickitat Co., WA, this species has been recorded as far east as the mouth of Pine Creek, about 6 miles e. of Roosevelt at the s. edge of the county, and in Bickleton at the north, all within the last year or so.

2 on 27 Oct., at the village of Klickitat (KG). This site has been hosting scrub-jays for a decade or more. During an 11 Nov. Bald Eagle survey along the Klickitat R., starting at Lyle, “scrub-jays were prevalent all the way up to Klickitat,” where the survey stopped (CJF).

2 on 6 Nov., in Lonerock, s. Gilliam Co., OR, apparently the second county record (CK, PTS). Well to the e., beyond the Gorge, W. Scrub-Jays have turned up below McNary Dam on 30 Oct. and at Pendleton on 7 Nov., both in Umatilla Co., OR. (bird newsletter from Pendleton fide PTS). It looks like scrubs-jays are expanding their range in n. central Oregon at a rapid rate.

1 on 7 Sept., along GPNF Rd. 65, to n. of Thomas Lake trailhead 0.5 mi., at w. edge of Indian Heaven Wilderness, at ~4100 ft. elev. (KG).

6 on 15 Sept., calling, at Trout Lake NAP; “…spotted them after I heard a second vocalisation. Five were in flight from large snag upslope from boat launch (same tree as Lewis’ Woodpecker sighting from July) and the sixth individual landed in same snag and perched there for 30 seconds or so before departing in a northwesterly direction. Altogether I only heard three total vocalisations…I doubt that I’ve ever seen one at anywhere near this low an elevation.” (KG).

Black-billed Magpie – 2 on 20 Sept., along Willard Springs Trail at Conboy Lake NWR (KG).

12 on 24 Sept., total found in the Columbia Hills IBA se. sector, 3 along hwy 14 and 9 along Rock Creek Rd –during the fall raptor survey (BR, SJ).

Am. Crow - 1 on 1 Aug., a black-and-white piebald individual with flock of crows "cleaning up the park" at Northwestern Lake, Skamania Co., WA; it was <35 % white, >65 % black, with white in wings and tail too (JA).

Com. Raven – 18 on 24 Sept., flew up from bank on s. side, below hwy. 14, closeby MP 105, just e. of the Hartley Canon crossing. There must have been roadkill on the bank (BR, SJ).

Horned Lark – 1 on 23 Oct., “one female-plumaged individual foraging at the summit” of the Grassy Knoll, Skamania Co., WA, at 3649 ft.; “flushed it several times before we were able to get close looks (without it flushing)” (ER, KG). This seems like an unusual site for Horned Lark, though it may not be visited very frequently by birders; it’s listed as “uncommon” on the Skamania Co. checklist compiled by WC.

On 5-6 Nov., along the Gilliam Co. raptor runs, northern and southern routes, “modest numbers, not as many as the thousands I saw last January. They haven’t arrived in force yet” (CK, PTS).

At least 2 are ASY males; during this scan there was a female-plumaged martin perching in one nest cavity, head facing outward, and a second perched vertically at the same entrance for a bit. I suspect that these are several family groups, including fledged young, judging by their behaviour; at times most of these birds were flying around the river mouth, calling. Flicker-excavated cavities in 2 dolphins each had a martin's head poking out during our observations from 2 different viewpoints (BMcK, SJ).

1 on 13 Aug., heard only, calling in high flight over Bingen School Inn at ~09:45 (SJ).

2 on 14 Aug., an ASY male, calling, chased an Am. Kestrel s. of Bingen Pond while a 2nd bird was heard calling further east ~10:15. Later hear martins calling in vicinity of nest in piling along e. side of Bingen's marina-heard from a distance, in the park at nw. end of the marina (SJ).

E. Sunnyside Rd. and Trout Lake-Glenwood Hwy (N. Sunnyside Rd.) was a single Lesser (non-adult male) seen calling from an exposed perch. …it flew to the east…” (KG). These records (for 12 Sept. & 21 Sept.) are the first ones reported from the Trout Lake Valley, so far as I am aware (SJ).

1 on 29 Sept., tentative I.D., atop little conifer sapling just w. of pkg. lot for the Canopy Crane Hut and at margin of abandoned nursery beds, Wind River Experimental Forest, Trout Creek Division, GPNF, Skamania Co., WA; it flew to n. with flock of about 20 Zonotrichia sparrows and was lost at ditch riparian or forest edge, at ~17:05. It was a brief view, but big white patch at base of primaries and short-looking bill caught my attention immediately, as did the overall look and small size of the bird (compared to the sparrows); suspect that it was a HY male in changing plumage (SJ). There have been very few records of Lesser Goldfinch in Skamania Co.

OTHER SPECIES OF INTEREST

Wooly Bear – 1 on 6 Oct., along a trail in St. Cloud Recr. Area, Skamania Co., WA; the first such caterpillar seen this fall (CJF, SJ).

1 on 12 Oct., seemed lifeless, but not yet stiff, where riparian vegetation meets w. side sandbar at the Klickitat R. mouth (SJ).

Painted Lady – 1 on 9 Oct., along s. side trail at Bingen Pond, at top of blackberry thicket; this individual looks fresh, not faded (SJ).

Orange-tipped Admiral – 1 on 11 Sept., along s. trail to the beach at Rooster Rock SP, Multnomah Co., OR (SJ).

Preying Mantis - 1 on 25 Aug., a large greenish individual, in plants at Bingen School Inn, Cedar and E. Humboldt streets, Bingen, WA; another was found inside BSI on 28 Aug., having flown in through an open window, perhaps to feed on insects attracted to the on-all-night light (SJ).

Rough-skinned Newt – 2 on 30 Sept. seen while working in the Thornton T. Munger RNA, Wind River Experimental Forest, Trout Creek Division, GPNF, Skamania Co., WA; today is the first day of the fall rains. None were encountered during the previous two days of work in similar habitat here (AW, SJ).

Rattlesnake - 1 on 10 Aug., curled up on the doorstep ~21:30 at home along McConiga Rd. (RGH, BH).

Garter Snake – 1 on 30 Aug., a small one ~ one ft. long, coiled under a rock alongside BSI; when rock was lifted it went in behind a board leaning against the wall (SJ).

2 on 6 Oct., slither off trail (on overcast day) at St. Cloud Recr. Area, Skamania Co., WA; one, ~1 ˝ ft. long with rather drab markings, was tightly coiled; other, ~2 ft. long, had coral-red side stripes (CJF, SJ).

California Ground Squirrel – 3 on 1 Oct., singly, along Hood River waterfront (SJ).

Fox Squirrel – 1 on 24 Aug., a lost individual wandered out onto the sandbar at w. side of the Hood R. mouth from 08:50 until 09:46, when someone’s dog charged down from the cul-de-sac above and gave brief chase. Squirrel made a beeline for the willow-alder brush on the little rock jetty, but the dog grabbed it moments after squirrel hit the water (a shallow channel ~3m. wide separates sandbar from brush) and viciously shook it til it was dead. Dog’s owner stood watching on the riverbank above the sandbar. When confronted, he said “you’re wasting your time talkin’ to me, my dog’s always killing stuff, that’s what he does.” He drove off with his medium-sized, tannish-light brown dog in a silver Subaru station wagon with WA plates “875 – RUN.” When presented with this information the Port of Klickitat passed the buck, referring me to the county’s animal control officer. And she gave me the run-around, saying the county has no leash law; if the port has such a rule it’s up to them to enforce it (SJ).

Western Grey Squirrel – 4 on 24 Sept., along Rock Creek Rd., Klickitat Co., WA, a single, two together and one heard only, between Old Hwy 8 and Newell Rd., in walnuts (BR, SJ).

Nuttall’s Cottontail – 4 on 9 Oct., at Bingen Pond: two were freshly D.O.R. along W. Lakeview Blvd., between the P.U.D. building and inlet ditch crossing at the ne. corner, and two singles were jumped along the s. side trail (SJ).

Mink - 1 on 1 Aug., at Rowland Lake, D.O.R. at s. side of hwy. 14 at e. end of guard rail beside e. bound lane, just e. of jct. with Old Hwy 8 and immediately w. of the trees and vegetation growing on land between hwy. 14 and the s. lake (SJ).

1 on 21 Oct., at the washed-out bridge on Trout Lake Creek in the NAP (JE, PM).

Marten - 1 on 2 Aug., sauntering ahead of us on GPNF Rd. 2329 at Rd. 5601, < 1/2 mi. se. of Olallie L., Skamania Co., WA. At one point, before disappearing into the forest, it stopped on the road and looked back at us, at which time I clearly saw the tawny throat area and shape of its head, ears. It was dark brown, much bigger than a weasel, with proportionately longer legs (BL, TA, SJ).

Bobcat – 1 on 5 or 6 Nov., “…found in an old hawk nest on a cliff face along hwy. 206…e. of Condon, just below the rim. We stopped to look at the nest to see if it held a bird. At first we saw a brownish mound, like the back of a goose. Then our eyes swung to the left and we were met with a face. Two yellow eyes stared back at us, intently. We were looking, face to face, at a Bobcat!! It was still cuddled there when we left.” This was in Gilliam Co., OR (CK, PTS).

1 on 22 Nov., moseyed along the bluff through a front yard s. of McConiga Rd. (w. of Lyle), where it was photographed, at ~16:15 (BH).

Coyote - 1 on 14 Aug., loafing at Bingen Pond, at 08:05 (M&RB, SJ).

Black Bear – 1 on 26 Aug., “medium-sized (black coat), foraging in early evening near mixed flock of bird migrants…at elev. 2200 ft., e. of the lower Trout Lake Valley” (KG).

Mountain Goat - 10 on 5 Aug., two were kids, foraging among the scree below the Mazama Glacier at ~7400 ft. elev.; seen from 7895 ft. peak at s. end of Mazama Glacier (~0.8 mi. ne. of South Butte), sw. Yakima Co., WA (ER, KG).

All records are from Klickitat County, WA, unless otherwise indicated, with the exception of records from the well-known cities of Hood River, OR and Stevenson, WA, located in Hood River County and Skamania County, respectively.

The Devil's Half Acre Meadow banding operation is at 3750-3800 ft. elevation. I will try to get exact numbers for the birds banded on 26 Aug., that I recorded above with the broad term “many,” and will then make changes to the data in a future update.

The Gilliam Co. raptor run data (5-6 Nov.) was gleaned from a posting to OBOL. General comments: We [CK, PTS] found the wintering species were only beginning to appear. Rock Creek, which cuts across the whole county, was a string of intermittent puddles and low flows, with long stretches of just dry stony bed.

On Saturday we did the northern route, which zig-zags from the Columbia R. down to Condon. We found more young N. Shrikes than we did at the end of last winter (March, April). The late afternoon turned rainy.

It rained and blew in the night, but Sunday offered better weather. Late in the day we saw the ghost of the sun. We did the route south of Condon. (Paul T. Sullivan).
